PEOPLE MAGAZINE FEATURE The Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle: An Oral History of the ‘60s Rock Masterpiece That Rose from the DeadPosted on April 21st, 2017 in Music, News, The Zombies
People Magazine recently sat down with all members of The Zombies and exquisitely explore the phenomenon that was and still is ‘Odessey and Oracle’ as the 50 year celebrations continue to captivate music fans across the world.

The Zombies recently released Odessey: The Zombies in Words and Images, a book featuring new interviews about and artwork inspired by the album. While perusing the new Odessey & Oracle artwork (inspired by that album’s lush psychedelic cover), the group wondered what it would be like to see it come to life.
Enter the official lyric video for album opener “Care of Cell 44,” a lovely, lively animated lyric video for the Zombies’ classic.
Rod exclaims, “Viv Boucherat – who incidentally is Chris White’s [Zombies bassist] wife! — absolutely knocked me out when she first showed us the artwork she had created to illustrate each Odessey & Oracle song for the beautiful book BMG and Cindy da Silva had put together to celebrate our 50th anniversary tour of the album, these pictures were then animated, and I love the results. ‘Care Of Cell 44′ is a good example; the juxtaposition of fragments of the lyrics ( in my handwriting ) with Viv’s original imagery capture the spirit of the song in an imaginative way. This is exactly what works so well each night as it plays behind us on the tour, to create a mood and heighten the audience experience.”
A lyric video has been made for each track for the tour and now available for all to enjoy on The Zombies You Tube Channel
Royal Albert Hall and Classic Album Sundays are putting on a great show on June 12th which will feature The Zombies.
The Zombies are indeed delighted to be part of The Royal Albert Hall’s Summer of Love: Revisited programme, a series of talks, screenings and performances in the Elgar Room celebrating this pivotal moment of cultural history.
Classic Album Sundays will be hosting four amazing events each exploring a different part of the sixties counterculture movements.
For their fourth event they will be joined by The Zombies as we look at their iconic album Odessey and Oracle.
Rod, Colin and Chris will also be signing their new book, The Odessey: The Zombies in Words and Images, which will be available to purchase on site.
As part of Summer of Love: Revisited, Classic Album Sundays’ Colleen Murphy and The Zombies’ Rod Argent, Colin Blunstone and Chris White discuss their 1968 classic album Odessey and Oracle, considered to be one of the most significant British psychedelic records, and including the iconic hit song Time of the Season.
This will be followed by an uninterrupted vinyl playback of Odessey and Oracle in full on the CAS audiophile hi-fi, featuring Audio Note UK and Klipschorns.
In their day, The Zombies were one of the few English bands of the 1960s that enjoyed true global popularity, with two American number ones, chart records throughout the rest of the world, and a deep and lasting affection for their music. Their final single Time Of The Season came from their second and final album, 1967’s Odessey & Oracle (famously misspelled by the cover artist), and remains perhaps their greatest artistic statement.

On Wednesday, March 15th Rod, Colin, Chris and Hugh are doing a very special book signing in New York at the iconic Strand Book Store to mark the release of “The Odessey: The Zombies in Words and Images”.
It marks the fiftieth anniversary of the recording of their classic ‘Odessey and Oracle’ album. The Zombies have assembled an eclectic collection of rare and unseen photos, original artwork, and personal memories that offer readers an intimate snapshot of one of the more influential bands to emerge from the UK music scene of the 1960s.
The lavishly illustrated book includes handwritten lyrics for 22 songs. From early hits “She’s Not There” and “Tell Her No,” through every song on ‘Odessey and Oracle’ – including the hit single “Time of the Season” – and all the way up to today, each selection is accompanied by a running oral history by original band members Rod Argent, Colin Blunstone, Chris White, and Hugh Grundy.

The Zombies legendary album ‘Odessey & Oracle’ will be toured in full from Jamaica through North America and even onto Primavera festival in Spain next year.
The Zombies will give North American fans and beyond one last opportunity to hear the group’s 1968 masterpiece ‘Odessey & Oracle’ live and in its entirety during a major spring/summer tour.
The group’s surviving members – singer Colin Blunstone, keyboardist Rod Argent, bassist Chris White and drummer Hugh Grundy – will kick off their next stretch of dates March 1st on a Flower Power Cruise through the Caribbean and then onwards from March 17th in Glenside, Pennsylvania.
As the Zombies wrote on Facebook, 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the band recording ‘Odessey & Oracle’; the album wasn’t released until April 1968, four months after the band had broken up. As a result, the band’s original members never performed the album’s tracks live together until their 2015 reunion tour.
Tickets for the final Odessey & Oracle show are now on sale and can be seen here
In addition to the tour, the Zombies will release an album-sized coffee table book in March 2017 about the making of Odessey & Oracle, featuring handwritten lyrics and artwork from artist Terry Quirk, who painted the album cover (and infamously misspelled the album title).
Rod has recently given comment to Billboard Magazine upon the exciting news that The Zombies have been nominated to the legendary Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame.
Rod explains, “This has felt like a special twelve months period for us,” agrees fellow founding Zombie Rod Argent. “Its beginning was marked by a phone call from Billboard last October to congratulate us on making the Top 100 Album Sales chart [with Still Got That Hunger] for the first time in 50 years as ‘The Zombies.’ Its conclusion has now been perfectly rounded off exactly a year later by the news that we’ve been nominated for a second time for the Rock’n'Roll Hall Of Fame! Thanks everybody — this has come at a really exciting time for us, as the band has never felt so energized, and the acceptance of what we are creating now, as well as the older classic material we love to play, is heartwarming!”
